It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Hearts are glowing, I’m hopeful of mistletoeing, and I’m wondering how I’m going to pay for all of those presents under the tree. It’s the season of carols dancing out from every speaker in every mall to sing to us of magical snowmen, family gatherings, the Advent story, love, joy, and sometimes even melancholy and heartache.
The Advent carols have us singing about preparation. People look East the time is near...So set the hearth and set the table. They are about the haunting story of a small child born in a barn who will come into the world to save. Do you hear what I hear? O come O Come Emanuel...Until the son of God appear, Rejoice! They are melodies that often come in minor keys, the darkness and silent nights before the the light and major keys when we awaken on Christmas day and sing Joy to the world the lord has come!
Secular carols remind us that we better watch out, better not pout, or a certain man with a bag won’t make his way down our chimney. We sing about decking the halls with boughs of holly, preparing figgy pudding, and jingle bell rocking. We sing to our Oh Christmas trees and roast chestnuts over an open fire (which I’ve always wanted to do).
It is also a time when we celebrate the season. While my Texas home may not be blanketed in snow, I will still imagine the bleak midwinter, where snow lay on the ground and should I find myself cozied up by the fire with a nice, handsome gentlemen, I will certainly sing, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!
So God rest ye merry gentlemen and blog readers! I will be featuring a carol or two each day throughout the month of December by artists old and new. In this hectic time of year, sip some egg nog, stroll and enjoy the lights, and listen to some great tunes for it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
