fun Fun fun Fest Day 2

SO MUCH DUST!
It's a good thing the music was so kick ass on Saturday of FFFFest, because the dust was out of control and miserable. Then again, with bands like The Joy Formidable, Tune-Yards, Ra Ra Riot, Lykke Li and Spoon, I don't think anyone was going to let a little (or a lot) of dust get in the way.

The Joy Formidable rocked out from their first chord to their very last. Ritzy, with her stark blonde hair contrasting her all black attire, tossed and slammed her guitar multiple times during the final song, tore up cardboard, and finally stormed off stage in a defiant, and awesome rock start moment. They were amazing and I felt like I, too, could be a badass rock start just for being in their presence.

Tune-Yards were a fun treat in the afternoon. Decked in Neon with a half-shaved head, Merrill Garbus delivered beautifully arranged cacophony. Driven by heavy percussion and chants, it often had a futuristic tribal feel to it.

Ra Ra Riot was a slight disappointment, though I'm not entirely sure why. They played great songs and did a good job of taking their often mellower feeling songs and adjusting them to have a higher energy feel fitting of a festival setting. Still, there was something lacking and I can't quite put my finger one it. **The band announced later that they had to cancel their show in Santa Fe due to the lead singer losing his voice. Perhaps that had something to do with the lackluster performance at FFFF...

Spoon closed out the night, but Lykke Li before them was the clear highlight of the festival for me, even if she came on 25 minutes late. Seriously, she kicked so much ass there will be an entire post devoted to it.
