New Music From The Greatcoats

The Greatcoats are a band out of Austin, TX with a new EP for free download on their site. Their sound is super catchy and delightfully danceable. Their 1960's Brit pop influence in their music is clear. They remind me of a peppier version of Alex Turner. They will be playing a release party in January here in Austin. Be sure to check them out!

Hello Caller

photo taken from hellocaller.com

Hello Caller is a new group out of Austin, TX. They are an alt-folk group that distinguishes their sound with the deep, rich sounds of cello and the high, whimsical sounds of the xylophone with harmonizing vocals and instrumentals in between. In exchange for your email address, which will keep you up to date on all of their concerts and happenings, they will also send you a free download of their entire 4-song demo! It is a great set of songs to hold you over until the full length album is released. They are set to start recording next month. Check them out!

New Decembrists EP

Colin Meloy's distinct voice, and their timeless melodies are what make The Decembrists a band I come back to over and over. They just released a new EP, Long Live the King, which continues to explore old and mythical themes. It is a delight.

Florence and The Machine: Ceremonials

Florence Welch is one crazy bitch if she's anything like her lyrics suggest, but damn is she a talented and awesome crazy bitch! Her new album, Ceremonials dropped yesterday. I'm still working my way through a few solid listens before posting my official review, but here's the video for her first single off of the album. So far I'm loving it.

New Music from Wild Child

There's nothing very "wild child" about this duo out of Austin, TX. Their sound is soothing, soulful, folk. Here is their newest single, "Silly Things." Their debut album is due out later this month. Enjoy!

Show Previews: The Wheeler Brothers

I love it when great music falls into my lap. It's better than Christmas! Such was the case last week when a blurb about The Wheeler Brothers appeared in my inbox. They are a local folk-rock group who I have been playing on repeat ever since. Their music makes me forget that the world outside my door has turned brown and that I haven't seen rain in months. They are refreshing, fun, uplifting, play real loud music. They are playing their homecoming show this Friday night at The Mohawk and it is sure to be a great party. They'll also be playing Utopia Fest in the fall (another great reason to get tickets for Utopia Fest)!

Weekend Update: Dum Dum Girls

The Dum Dum Girls will be bringing their indie pop sound to the stage tonight at the Mohawk. This fun girl group has an album coming out and the snippets I've heard sound great. I expect it will show their maturity and establishment as as group. Check out an old video and a teaser video for their new album. Definitely a show to check out this weekend.

New Music from the Givers

I first heard about Givers during my SXSW research days this past winter when a friend hooked his ipod up to my speakers and they serenaded our dinner. Unfortunately, I missed them at the fest. I heard of them the second time when a stranger at a concert heard me talking about them and grabbed my shoulders and insisted that go to their concert. “They’re AMAZING” he praised. With such insistance from a perfect stranger, I immediately bought a ticket for their June 8th show at Antone’s. They are billed as dance/ pop/ indie/ folk, how can it be anything but great?

Their first full-length album, “In Light” is being released the day before their Austin show and in typical amazing NPR fashion, they are streaming it all online for your listening pleasure. It is fabulous and the more I listen to it, the more I think they will live up to that strangers promise of a great show and be AMAZING!

New Music for this Ukulele lover

Who doesn’t love the ukulele? It’s a teeny tiny mini guitar with a cute, high pitched sound. It’s the instrument of sunsets, paradise beaches and carefree rides on an old rickey bicycle through back roads Hawaii. I once had a ukulele that I never new how to really play, but loved it anyway because it was a ukulele with it’s sweet sound and fun to say name. I first got a real feel for what the ukulele was capable of when I heard youtube sensation, Jake Shimabukuro at the Rochester Jazz Fest a few years back. What he could do with such a limited instrument left me baffled and in awe.
Now Eddie Vedder, of Pearl Jam is tackling this small instrument in his second solo album. Not quite taking the ukulele to the limits that Shimabukuro does, Vedder keeps it close and plays with it’s quieter sounds and melodies.
Vedder’s deep, grounded voice singing with the higher, dancing melody of the ukulele is a perfect combination. I am in love with everything about it.
NPR is streaming the entire album on their website.Check it out. It will be the perfect soundtrack to your day.
